Just signed up tonight - I've never heard of a clog. What is it, anyway?

clog == community blog.

It's a shared blog about a topic of mutual interest to its members. So, for example, if you're into cats, you could join the "My Cat Is Better Than Your Cat" clog and share your cat photos with other cat enthusiasts.

If you're interested in something, and there isn't a clog for it yet, you can create your own clog.
